Steampunk to take on world

Oamaru already lays claim to the title of Steampunk capital of New Zealand, and now it is getting ready to take on the world.

On June 4, hundreds of steampunkers are expected to flood into Oamaru to take part in a Guinness World Record attempt to have the most people dressed in Steampunk outfits in one place.

The record attempt will be made at the Oamaru Club, in Severn St.

Organiser Helen Jensen said the record was 184.

She expected the event to gain the local Steampunk movement notoriety.

"The world takes notice of it. It brings attention to Oamaru.''

She has been involved in Steampunk for seven years and liked the flexibility it allowed its followers in what they could wear and create.

"We don't follow the rules.''

Steampunk provided adults with a sense of play and allowed them to use their engineering and mechanical skills Ms Jensen said.
