Oamaru man charged with importing class A drug

A 22-year-old Oamaru man is in custody and facing a maximum sentence of life in prison after the New Zealand Customs Service intercepted 102g of methamphetamine from Asia.

Customs said the drugs were worth between $100,000 and $120,000.

The man was arrested and charged with importing a class A drug and possessing a class A drug for supply.

A Customs spokeswoman said a joint investigation with police was launched after Customs intercepted the package at the International Mail Centre in Auckland.

The methamphetamine was found hidden among shoes and clothing inside a parcel destined for an Oamaru address. They were identified after what the spokeswoman called a "Customs risk assessment''.

Customs investigators and Dunedin police executed a search warrant at the man's home in Oamaru last Friday.

During the search, officers also located a small amount of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.

Customs investigations manager Maurice O'Brien said the arrest was an example of Customs' work "extending beyond the border to apprehend those who attempt to import drugs''.

The man appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Saturday, and was remanded in custody to reappear today.

Further charges might be laid.
