Bail for man charged with importing drug

An Oamaru man charged with importing the class A drug methamphetamine has been released on bail.

James Patton (22) was arrested after a police and Customs Service search of his Oamaru home last Friday arising from the interception of 102g of methamphetamine at the International Mail Centre in Auckland.

He was charged with importing a class A drug (methamphetamine) and possessing the drug for supply.

Patton appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Saturday and was remanded in custody until yesterday, when he appeared before Judge Kevin Phillips to apply for bail.

Public defender Andrew Dawson said police were not opposing the granting of bail with strict conditions.

Patton was remanded to appear in the Oamaru District Court on June 22. As conditions of his bail, he is to live at a specified Oamaru address, report to the local police twice a week and not use drugs or alcohol.

He is also not allowed to apply for a passport or other travel documents and is not to use or log into Facebook.
