Dog trials champs anybody’s to win

The president of the host club at this year's South Island and New Zealand dog trials championships is not making any predictions about winners.

Omarama Collie Dog Club president Simon Inkersell said the competition, which begins on Monday, was anybody's for the taking.

"Everybody here deserves to be here,'' he said.

"Everybody has the same chance. Everybody starts off with 100 points and it's up to you to keep them.''

He said that his hopes for the competition, which would probably run a full week, was for the community in Omarama to benefit and for visitors to the area to enjoy themselves.

"We've got our local competitors. It's our home club. It would be good to see a local do well,'' Mr Inkersell said.

"I just want people to have a good time. We always find four winners, but I just want people to enjoy it.''

He said as the town, and Twizel and Otematata, were providing accommodation for the expected 400-odd people coming to town there would be "spin-offs'' for local businesses.

Omarama Top 10 Holiday Park owner-operator Tony Chapman said he was expecting a busy week.

The dog trials at the beginning of winter had been a shot in the arm for his business.

South Island and New Zealand Championship trials publicity officer Dave Anderson said the event had not been held in Omarama since 2006, and it would go ahead whatever the weather.
