A new home is within reach for a vital Waitaki service.

The Otematata Volunteer Fire Brigade has just been given plans of a proposed new building the Waitaki community can expect to see built in the next five to 10 years.

Senior Firefighter Tania Cochrane said when it rained in the township, buckets were put out to catch leaks in the building constructed by the former Ministry of Works in 1957.

"We've seen rough plans.

"It's yet to be signed off by Wellington.''

She called the news exciting for Otematata and great for the brigade.

She said the station's structure would become more efficient and not at the cost of any vehicle bays.

The preliminary report showed three vehicle bays, a kitchen, a canteen, a training room and an operation room.

"It's been in the pipeline for the last three years.''

Senior Firefighter Deborah Simpson said the revamped station would be a great asset for the community.

"The Fire Service is committed to providing for Otematata and moving forward.''

Ms Cochrane said fire stations nationwide were taking a building programme.

The station was given to the service in.
