Scam inquiry continues

Police inquiries are continuing into a scam in which an elderly Oamaru woman lost $4000.

Senior Constable Bruce Dow, of Oamaru, said within the past two weeks an Oamaru woman was called by two people advising her Prime Minister John Key had selected her to be among a group of people to be given money.

Snr Const Dow said over several phone calls, the woman was told that if she wanted to receive the money, she would first have to deposit $4000 in an international bank account.

He said within four hours the woman was contacted again and told a banking error had occurred and she would have to deposit a further $4000, which she did.

After a night of panicking, the woman then approached her bank and with the help of her BNZ bank manager was able to retrieve the second deposit. However, she remains out of pocket by $4000.
