Water stops short of homes flooded last month

Henley residents had more anxious moments yesterday as rain again caused floodwater to pond near the township.

The water stopped well short of entering homes this time but left evacuated Henley resident Kerrie Hooper "on edge".

"We're not sleeping and last night I heard the rain hammering down ..."

Mr Hooper and wife Kristine are living in temporary accommodation at Taieri Mouth while their cottage is dried out and repaired.

It was flooded by the Taieri River during heavy rain last month.

The recently renovated cottage was insured against flood damage but Mr Hooper does not expect to be able to return to it for at least two months.

Another victim of last month's flood, Jay MacLean, was keeping a close eye on nearby floodwater yesterday as he tried to restart his engineering business.

The flood had cost him a week of productive work and he said he was grateful his customers had been very understanding.

He expected it would be months before all his machinery was back in working order.

Mr MacLean said Henley residents would need to discuss the flooding situation with local authorities at some point and consider whether the township could be better protected.

"Whether they would be interested or not is another thing. I guess, being a small town, we are sort of bottom of the list with not a lot of clout."

At its meeting today, the Otago Regional Council will consider a report on options for flood protection of East Taieri land.

Prepared by senior engineers, the report favours "small-scale" physical works "supported by" land use planning and land use controls.

The report says the overall flood risk of the area is increasing because of the creation of new lifestyle blocks on "flood-prone land".

It recommends a council workshop prepare an "integrated package" for public consultation.
