Flood alerts for some Otago rivers

Rainfall and snow melt because of the warm weekend temperatures have led to flood alerts for some of Otago's rivers.

Flood alerts were triggered on the Pomahaka River and Deep Stream, on the Taieri, yesterday.

Otago Regional Council environmental information and science director John Threlfall said the Pomahaka River at Leithen Glen peaked at 220cumecs yesterday afternoon before dropping, but the river was rising downstream and was expected to peak overnight.

Farmers were warned to remove stock from low-lying areas next to the river.

The high flows were the result of the rain and warm temperatures melting snow, he said.

Deep Stream looked like it would peak at about 100cumecs late yesterday afternoon, just short of its second flood alert at 108cumecs.

Canadian Flat, which also fed into the Taieri, was another rising waterway, but the two flows were not expected to reach the Taieri at Outram at the same time, Dr Threlfall said.

The low level of the Taieri (40cumecs) meant there were no concerns about flooding at this stage.

The rain in the headwaters of the Lakes district at the weekend had increased lake levels to normal high-flow levels but again not to a concerning extent, he said.
