Travelling quiz helps Cancer Society

During the next five weeks, a travelling quiz night will be held at venues throughout Otago and Southland to raise money for the Cancer Society.

The Great Otago and Southland Travelling Quiz Night began on Monday in Balclutha, with about 90 people attending. It raised $565.60.

Organiser Vicki Coats, of Stewart Island, said the quiz night would be held at 20 venues throughout the two regions.

Miss Coats hosts weekly quizzes at the South Sea Hotel on Stewart Island.

She said the travelling quiz was a free event, with donations given to the Otago and Southland division of the Cancer Society.

"It's been a great start, with our first quiz raising more than $500, and all the money goes to the society," Miss Coats said.

"Almost everyone knows someone who has had cancer. And from a small community on Stewart Island, many people I know personally have battled with cancer."

Each venue will have different prizes, with questions changing each night.

A 500g jar of Marmite spread, will be raffled.

The tour finishes in Stewart Island on May 20.
