Helicopters and ground crew are working to dampen down hotspots following a large tussock and forest fire which began on Friday night east of Hyde.

Dunedin City Council principal rural fire officer Graeme Still said the fire began as a controlled burn on a Hyde property, and at one point threatened a private and company's forest plantation.

He estimated the affected area to be around 1500ha of mainly tussock and scrub, but at least 75ha of plantation had been destroyed by fire.

A crew of more than 20 firefighters were continuing to dampen hotspots on the ground, while helicopters were also being used.

DCC rural fires manager Neil Brown yesterday said authorities were ''comfortable'' with the blaze.

Firefighters were expected to remain at the site for several days.
