Fewer overseas drivers crashing

The number of crashes on Otago roads involving overseas licence holders is on the way down.

Figures released to the Otago Daily Times this week show there were 55 crashes in Otago involving overseas drivers in 2013 - 15 fewer than the 70 recorded in 2012.

The trend was in line with the total number of crashes in the province - 1571 last year compared with 1690 the year before.

There were a total of 12 fatalities on Otago roads in 2013, compared with 15 in 2012, and one of those was of an overseas licence holder, compared with three in 2012.

In 2010 and 2011, one overseas licence holder died each year.

In 2013, six overseas licence holders were seriously injured in Otago.

In 2012, there were nine seriously injured, with three cases in both 2010 and 2011.
