Severe wind warning for the South

Motorists are being urged to take care on southern roads tomorrow following the release of a severe wind warning for the region.

MetService said this afternoon northwesterly winds are expected to reach gale force in Fiordland, Southland and Otago, with gusts of 120kmh to 140kmh from late tomorrow afternoon.

Emergency Management Southland manager Neil Cruickshank said the predicted wind gusts could make life difficult for motorists, particularly those driving high-sided vehicles such as trucks, buses and campervans.

"We are aware there may be extra traffic on the rural roads with Gypsy Day not far away, so it may be an idea not to be doing any moving on Wednesday afternoon," Mr Cruickshank said.

Trees may also be blown over in the wind, especially where there has been a lot of rain lately.

The strong winds are expected to be relatively short lived, ending on Thursday morning.
