Severe thunderstorm watch for Otago

Severe thunderstorms may hit central and eastern parts of Otago and Southland this afternoon, and Metservice has warned they may bring surface flooding and hail damage.

One or two of these thunderstorms might be severe, with rainfall of 25mm to 40mm and hour and large hailstones.

"Rainfall of this intensity can cause flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips," forecaster Paul Mallinson said today.

Motorists are urged to take care, as the storms could bring surface flooding and poor visibility.

"Large hail can cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses and vehicles, as well as make driving conditions hazardous.''
