It was a cool start to the holiday weekend for the South this morning, with snow settling on hills in many places.

Many inland areas woke to single digit temperatures, a far cry from the heat experienced through much of December and January.

While southerners might have to keep the winter woollies handy for the first day of Waitangi weekend, the outlook is much better for the coming days.

Temperatures are not expected to get much above the low teens today, but are predicted to climb back to more normal summer levels tomorrow and Sunday.

Dunedin is in line for a high of just 13degC today, but should be around 23 tomorrow and 26 on Sunday, MetService says.

Inland, Alexandra, which was down to a chilly 5degC overnight, is predicted to hit 27 tomorrow and 29 on Sunday.
