Snow affecting southern roads

Snow is falling in the South, prompting warnings for motorists to take care on roads around the region.

State Highway 94, Te Anau-Milford Sound is closed owing to snow, the New Zealand Transport Agency advises.

Caution is advised on SH1 around Gore, SH93 Clinton-Mataura, and SH90 Raes Junction-McNab.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council says chains are required on the Crown Range road, and ice is making several other roads in the area slippery.

Conditions seem likely to ease during the day. MetService is predicting scattered showers with snow to 400 metres at first for Central Otago; however, these are forecast to clear this afternoon, making way for fine spells.

Winds will gradually turn northwesterly and strengthen in the evening.
