Sub-zero start for many in South

It's a cold start for most areas in the South this morning with sub-zero temperatures in many places.

The central South Island is the coldest part of the country - Tekapo taking the honours with a temperature of -9.5degC at 6.45am, according to the MetService.

Alexandra Aerodrome had a reading of -7.9degC, and Dunedin Airport wasn't far behind, on -7.1.

Parts of the central North Island were also feeling the chill - Taumarunui leading the way there with -5.6degC.

The chilly conditions have prompted warnings for motorists owing to ice on several southern highways, including: SH1 Palmerston-McNab, SH87 Mosgiel-Kyeburn, SH85 Palmerston-Kyeburn, and SH8 the Lindis Pass.

The high pressure system that is bringing the freezing conditions looks set to persist in the South, at least until tomorrow, MetService says, meaning a frosty start to the week for many.
