Southern bands miss out

The two Otago bands which made it through to the final stages of the annual Smokefree Rockquest secondary school music competition found out yesterday they had both missed out on places in the national grand final.

Near Armageddon, from Mount Aspiring College in Wanaka, and Sycamore, from Logan Park High School in Dunedin, were in the top 20 bands in the country, after winning their regional finals and surviving the first shortlisting, but they were not named when the top six bands were announced yesterday.

The top six bands and the top three solo or duo acts will compete live at the grand final in Auckland in September.

All except one of the nine finalist acts are from the North Island.
