From wood chopping, shearing and prime livestock to minions and duvet-wearing synchronised swimmers, visitors to the West Otago A&P Show had the chance to have fun and get their gumboots dirty on Saturday.

Show secretary Emily Donavan, of Tapanui, said she was delighted with how well the show went.

In addition to about 2000 people passing through the gates at the showgrounds near Tapanui, she said there were good levels of entries for the livestock and horse events, while the numbers of sheep and cattle entered were up on last year.

Trade exhibitors and stall-holders were also pleased with numbers and the interest shown, particularly when compared to the previous year when it rained.

''It was sunny for most of the day with just a few showers,'' Mrs Donavan said,''The sunshine makes everyone happy, so it was a great day overall.''

She said committee members had told her they felt relaxed this year as the day ran smoothly and they were able to enjoy themselves.

They had spent much of last year's show day coping with muddy conditions and organising shelter.

In a first for the show, the West Otago Synchronised Swimmers performed to a laughing crowd.

Swimmer spokeswoman Lynne Raynbird, of Tapanui, said the group of women first performed the skit for a Tapanui talent show earlier this year, and they were trained by Marja Captijn, who was a synchronised swimmer from the Netherlands.

''We made the costumes - bathers - from duvets from the Sally Army,'' Mrs Raynbird said.

Singers Jenny Mitchell and Helen van der Linden performed during the day, and other entertainment included tractor dancing, gumboot throwing, dog barking and speed shearing competitions.

The children were entertained by magician Wayne McEwan.
