A new website for people wanting to move to the Clutha district was showcased at an official launch at Balclutha on Monday night.

The Clutha Country Live and Work website, was unveiled at the Clutha Development Trust's official relaunch as an incorporated society.

The society's aim is to encouraging economic growth in the Clutha district.

Executive officer Linda Moore said it was a chance to refresh the Clutha Development brand and move forward.

The new website was not yet live online, but was expected to be working by the end of this week.

Mrs Moore said it would be a portal for businesses searching for employees as well as employees who wanted to come to the district.

Aimed at providing more help to people looking for jobs, the website would also have accommodation options.

Silverfern Farms beef production manager Mark Frisby addressed the 50-strong crowd at the launch at Rosebank Lodge. He said there were almost 300 people commuting on buses from Dunedin to work at Silverfern Farms every day, which was a problem as they were not directly contributing or giving back to the district they worked in.

‘‘While we have the people, we don't have them here,'' he said.

Clutha Development chairman Rob Hewett said there was ‘‘a little problem'' as the district had great resources and assets, but did not do a good enough job telling the world about them.

He said the new website would be a ‘‘unique window into our district'' and gave the area the chance to market itself.

It would complement Clutha Development's own site, which gave information on projects under way and investment opportunities, and the Destination Clutha site, which outlined information for tourists and about activities in the district.

The launch event for Clutha Development was attended by representatives of several of the major local businesses and Clutha District Council staff.

Other speakers included members of the Clutha Development team and Danone Balclutha site operations manager Andrew Johns.
