A shortlist of albatross chick names has been chosen.

More than 2400 names were suggested in a competition to name the northern royal albatross chick, which hatched at Taiaroa Head on Otago Peninsula in January.

A panel of judges from the Department of Conservation and Pukekura Co-Management Trust made a shortlist of five names, all Maori words.

They are: Rereroa (flying over great distances), Kapehu (compass), Kaewa (wanderer, traveller, drifter, rover, rambler, adventurer), Kapua (cloud) and Moana (ocean, sea, wide expanse of water).

The names have been put out to a public vote.

The winning name will be announced on the Doc albatross chick webcam on June 21.
