Frost prompts warnings for motorists

Southern drivers are being warned of hard frosts this morning, as much of the region wakes to sub-zero temperatures.

Both the Dunedin City Council and Queenstown Lakes District Council are advising of frosts on roads, and they urge motorists to drive to the conditions.

MetService showed Dunedin Airport with a temperature of -4degC around 6.30am,  while Queenstown had -2degC and Alexandra -1degC.

Fairfax media reports that ice on the runway has delayed flights in Invercargill this morning.

At least three departing flights were delayed owing to "a substantial amount of ice on the runway," an Air New Zealand staff member said.

All of the South Island's alpine passes are open this morning, but the NZ Transport Agency advises people to expect wintry conditions and take extra care.
