A landslip on the banks of the Clutha River at Albert Town could expose rock work to erosion.

The Otago Regional Council is examining options for short-term and long-term solutions to the slip, upstream of the Albert Town Bridge.

Council engineering, hazards and science director Gavin Palmer said the landslip did not directly affect any private property, but in the longer term it could expose the council's existing rock work to erosion.

"This refers to buttressing work carried out in 2003 and 2004 to strengthen the Clutha River bank immediately upstream of the bridge.''

What actions would be taken were still being considered, he said.

Buttressing already in place and further measures being considered by the council "should provide sufficient protection ... in the event of an earthquake or flood,'' he said.

A section of a walking and cycling track that passed through the area was reopened in December 2014, after being closed due to the landslips.

Reports commissioned by the council showed it was safe for public use.
