Local body nominations grow as deadline nears

Nominations are starting to trickle in for local government seats in Otago and Southland districts.

New nominations have been received for John MacDonald, Craig Ferguson and Simon Stamers-Smith as councillors on the Queenstown-Wakatipu ward of the Queenstown Lakes district, and Scott Stevens has been nominated to represent the Arrowtown ward. Ed Taylor has been nominated for a seat on the Wanaka Community Board.

In North Otago, incumbent Gary Kircher has been nominated for Waitaki mayor, Craig Dawson has been nominated for councillor in the Ahuriri ward, Peter Garvin, Jock Howie and Melanie Tavendale have been nominated for Oamaru ward councillors and William Kingan has been nominated to represent the Corriedale ward.

No nominations have yet been received for seats on the Waimate District Council.

There are only three nominations so far for roles in the Clutha district - Bryan Cadogan has been nominated for mayor, Stew Cowie has been nominated as a Clutha Valley ward councillor and John Herbert as a West Otago ward councillor.

Incumbent Tracy Hicks has been nominated for the Gore mayoralty, Doug Grant has been nominated to represent the Gore ward, Nicky Davis and Peter Grant have been nominated for the district wide ward, and Jim McAllister for the Wyndham ward.

In Invercargill, Wayne McEwan, Rodney Tribe, Rebecca Amunsden and Carl Heenan have been nominated for a seat on council.

Ebel Kremer and Brian Dillon have been nominated to represent the Southland District Council's Mararoa Waimea ward, Bruce Ford and Jon Spraggon for the Stewart Island Rakiura ward, George Harpur and Nicholas Perham for the Waiau Aparima ward, and Gavin Macpherson for the Winton Wallacetown ward.

Melanie Shepherd has been nominated for the Edendale Wyndham Community Board, Bruce Ford and Jon Spraggon for the Stewart Island Community Board, Kara Matheson for the Te Anau Community Board and Geoff Jukes for the Winton Community Board.

Nominations close on August 12.
