Constable Jonathan Pearce (right), of the Dunedin
Strategic Traffic Unit, was in Lawrence yesterday encouraging
drivers to stop their journeys for rest and refreshments.
On Const Pearce's left is Sergeant Chris MacAulay, and behind
him is Const Heath Evans.
The Lawrence Volunteer Fire Brigade prepared about 1000
sausages and cups of coffee or tea, which were given to
drivers between 3pm and 7pm.
Dunedin City Council community road safety adviser Henriette
Rawling said the driver reviver was a partnership between the
police, the Clutha District Council and the Dunedin City
Council.
The Dunedin population often spent time in Central Otago
during holidays, and Lawrence was the ideal location to hold
the driver reviver, which was designed to give people a break
from driving and educate them about safe driving practices,
such as getting enough rest before driving and taking
adequate breaks, she said.
