Invitation to Waipori wetlands

A rare chance to see wetlands usually inaccessible to the general public is to be provided by the Lake Waipori-Waihola Wetlands Society.

The society will run a family day from Bakers Point, Waihola, on November 28, and is providing boat and helicopter rides into the Waipori-Waihola wetlands.

Society spokesman David Vollweiler said members wanted to show the wetlands to the public before an extensive weed control programme was undertaken in January as part of a long-term restoration and enhancement project.

"We want to show people what we have been able to achieve, what we are going to do and what we can do.

"There is a lot of good work that has been done in the past 10 years by Fish and Game and the Department of Conservation."

As a lot of the area was inaccessible, the society had organised Helicopters Otago to take people on rides free, if they joined the society for $45, he said. The money would help cover the cost of the trips, being held from 10am to 2pm.
