Tourist loses way on walk

An American tourist, who nearly sparked a full-scale search and rescue operation yesterday morning, managed to walk out of the bush and hitchhike home.

Senior Sergeant Richard Whitmore said police were alerted that the 31-year-old tourist was missing from an address in Kaka Point after she failed to return home the previous night from a walk.

The woman was last seen on Tuesday at 7.30am, where she was believed to be heading to Surat Bay for a walk.

As a result of police inquiries, search and rescue volunteers were mobilised, "but prior to deployment the woman arrived home".

The woman, who was only prepared for a day walk, became lost and spent the night in the bush, where she had had to keep moving for warmth, he said.

The next day she was able to retrace her steps and find a road before hitchhiking back to safety.
