They are called the Romahapa Butchers - and they mean business.

Katelyn Kinraid, Jack Kennedy and Laura Thorn are heading to Masterton this week for the AgriKidsNZ grand final, which is being held as part of the Young Farmer Contest grand final.

The top three teams have been found from seven regions, with Tokonui and Riversdale also representing Otago-Southland.

On Friday, the grand finalists will compete in the preliminaries, which comprise a series of tasks with agricultural or educational themes, before the top seven teams progress to the "race-off" , which is the primary school version of the Young Farmer Contest'sagrisports.

It was Jack who came up with the team name Romahapa Butchers "because we butcher the other teams".

A team from Romahapa School, south of Balclutha, competed in last year's grand final after receiving a last-minute call-up when another team pulled out.

Pupils were keen to tackle it again this year and the school had four teams compete at the regional final, coach and manager Katy Button said.

Katelyn and Laura both came from farms while Jack, normally a pupil at Christchurch South Intermediate, had been staying with his grandparents in South Otago following the Christchurch earthquakes.

He returned to Romahapa School several weeks ago and has been preparing forAgriKidsNZ with his team-mates. Jack liked "everything" about farming, saying "It's not crowded like the city and there's always stuff to do". Most school holidays were spent on his grandparents' farm.

Mrs Button was impressed with how well the trio had been working as a team. They were very keen and there had also been very good support for their trip north.

Last week they had been to Telford Polytechnic to learn about sheep breeds and wool.
