Growing their own fruit and vegetables is instilling a love of gardening in a group of Waihola schoolchildren.

Pupils spend several hours each week learning about gardening and growing their own food from seeds and stones, under the guidance of Waihola woman Jean Timms.

School principal Sara Whitaker said Mrs Timms had a wealth of knowledge about gardening, and helped teach the pupils how to get the best fruit from tomatoes and other crops.

Holly Smolders said she liked growing plants at school, and also helped in the family garden at home.

"I plant them and eat them, but Dad does all the hard work," she said.

Pupils and the community had grown many plants to sell in the school's annual plant fair.

Ms Whitaker said money raised from previous plant fairs had been used to buy a tunnel house used by the pupils to nurture seedlings, and to grow frost-tender plants.

The fair is in its fifth year, and will be held on Sunday at the Waihola Community Hall from 10am-3pm.
