A 69-year-old Australian woman sustained minor leg injuries when the car in which she was a passenger crashed in the Catlins yesterday afternoon.

Constable Logan Dickie, of Balclutha, said the rented Toyota Corolla (pictured) was heading towards Papatowai on the Chaslands Highway. It went off the road about 1pm, coming to rest 5m or 6m in thick bush about 1km past the Lake Wilkie scenic reserve.

The 76-year-old Australian male driver was uninjured but his wife was taken to Clutha Health First with a minor leg injury.

Const Dickie said the crash appeared to have been caused by fatigue. He said it was a timely reminder for drivers to take regular breaks when travelling long distances.

Inquiries were continuing and charges were pending, he said.
