One person has died and another is in hospital following a two-car crash between Milton and Balclutha today.

The crash occurred on State Highway 1 about 5.30pm, a St John spokesman said.

One person died at the scene, while a second person had serious chest injuries and was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter.

A police communications spokesman said the highway would be closed until the morning, but detours were in place overnight.

The northern detour is via Station and Lakeside Roads and the southern detour by Paterson and Coe Roads.

Meanwhile, speed restrictions are in place on SH1 north of Dunedin after a slip about 5km south of Waikouaiti.

Motorists are advised to take extra care as work continues.
