Lions raise $70k for causes

Clinton has done it again. The wider Clinton area, which has a population of about 1100, has raised over $70,000 for charity.

At its meeting on Wednesday night, the Clinton Lions Club presented the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust and the Neurological Foundation with $37,000 each.

The club, which has 44 members, raised $74,000 from the Clinton Lions Club Advance Agriculture brassica competition in June. - Club president Drew Penny-cook said both were very worthy causes.

Neurosurgery fundraising campaign chairman Dr Brian McMahon and Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust intensive care paramedic Doug Flett said they were impressed by and grateful for the sizeable donation.

When asked by the Otago Daily Times how the club consistently raised so much money from a small community, Mr Pennycook said that when businesses supported a cause, the community did, too.

The club also raises money through several days' lamb-tailing each year, volunteers tailing between 20,000 and 25,000 lambs.

More than 200 attended the brassica awards and auction evening in June, Tim and Laura Williams, of Clinton Gorge, winning best swede crop with 20.13 tonnes of dry matter per hectare; Warren Erickson for kale (19.88); and Chris Lawlor for fodder beet (30.31).

The competition was first held last year, and he hoped it would return next year, Mr Pennycook said.
