Interpretive panels to tell lake region's story

The history of the Catlins Lake and birdlife that lives there is to be told in new interpretive panels that will be put in place near the old wharf piles.

Catlins Coast Incorporated, in conjunction with Catlins Promotions, is working with the community in developing the interpretation panels for the lake, which is 4km south of Owaka.

Funding for the project has been received by the William James Gall Charitable Trust which will allow the four panels to be placed at the layby area developed by the Clutha District Council.

Kim Dodds, the projects co-ordinator for Catlins Coast, said the panels would be themed on the history and birdlife of the lake and surrounding area.

''We have had great support from local landowners. They are very keen to have input into this project, which is vital to its success.

"This is a great opportunity to engage with local landowners and ensure the correct stories are told.

''Anyone who has more information about the history and wildlife of the area is welcome to contribute these by contacting me,'' said Mrs Dodds.

Catlins Coast, formerly Tourism Catlins, has completed the Entry Point Kiosks at Telford and Fortrose and the development of six panels at Florence Hill.

''We are currently at completion stage of the interpretation project for Fortrose.

"Catlins Coast Inc has been working with the community and key stakeholders to develop interpretation panels to be placed at the foreshore.''

A smartphone interpretation is also being considered.

''We can develop smartphone interpretation that will have historical context, overlay video, audio commentary or a virtual 'what it might have looked like in the past' aspect to heritage and wildlife sites.''
