A man was flown to Dunedin Hospital this afternoon after a serious crash near Clydevale.

Emergency services were called to Clutha River Rd about 5.45pm after a Ford Probe lost control on a moderate bend and slid across the road into a tree before coming to rest in a paddock.

The 30-year-old male passenger was thrown from the car and was trapped under a branch of the tree the vehicle struck.

He had to be extricated by the Fire Service, and was flown to Dunedin Hospital with moderate to serious injuries.

The 25-year-old female driver was taken to Balclutha Medical Centre with minor injuries.

Police are investigating whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
