The beach at Kaka Point is a favourite among families, according to 15-year lifeguard veteran Danny Mason, of Balclutha.
The beach typically only got ''busy'' in January when holidaymakers come to the seaside village. They came to Kaka Point as families and they came to the beach as families, he said.
Picnics with the grandparents were a common sight, as well.
''It's quite nice to see that, compared to other beaches,'' he said.
At its busiest there might be 250 people on the beach, but it was busy enough if there were 30 people on it, as was the case yesterday.
Lifeguard Christina Mason said last year at this time some children playing with a ball got out of their depth and she had to get in the boat to get them out of trouble, but this year she had not been needed for any rescues.
''It's a pretty safe beach, because it's shallow a wee way out,'' she said.
