Alleged shoplifter eludes police after car crash

A woman allegedly involved in three shoplifting incidents in Balclutha yesterday then crashed the car she was driving into a pole and later crashed into another car while avoiding police, Balclutha police say.

The woman had not been spoken to yesterday afternoon, but up to four officers were looking for her during the day, Constable Tanya Grant said.

A witness called police after seeing the car crash into a pole in Clyde St about 10.30am.

Police say that the woman got out of her car as they arrived but, while they were trying to find her, she got back in and drove off, rear-ended a car and drove away.

She then stopped, an officer approached on foot attempting to block her access to the road, but the woman reversed, requiring the officer to get out of her way.

An attempt was made to remove the keys from the car, but the woman ''peeled'' off down the street.

She was described as being of average height, of thin build, with short, blonde hair.

She was driving a green BMW registration GMC664 and wearing a grey hoodie and black leather jacket. She could face charges, police said.

Last night, police said they had not yet located the woman.
