State Highway 1 north of Balclutha was reduced to one lane yesterday as emergency crews worked to clear a southbound truck and horse trailer that were blown over in high winds near Smaill Rd about 3pm.

Police said the trailer was being used to transport furniture.

The driver was not injured.

MetService forecaster Rochelle Fleming said the wind was strongest around Balclutha yesterday about that time, with southwesterly winds averaging 50kmh, but gusting up to 90kmh.

She said the wind would have been stronger where it funnelled through valleys and around hills.
