Whitebaiters urged to check huts

Police want Inch Clutha whitebaiters to check their huts after they responded to a burglary complaint yesterday morning.

Constable Andy Denny, of Balclutha, said the one report led to anecdotal reports of adjacent whitebait huts sustaining damage consistent with break-in attempts.

Windows had been tried and holes had been punched through the side of a caravan.

''We think that two or three others, maybe more, have been targeted,'' he said.

''These are seasonal cribs, and there's no land registry information on who these people [the owners] are.''

The whitebait huts were all accessible from Centre Rd, Inch Clutha, along the Koau branch of the Clutha River.

Those targeted were the farthest away from the access points, Const Denny said.

The offenders had gone ''right to the end of the river mouth''.

Police believe the attempted burglaries occurred on the weekend of May 16- 17.
