Progress on street upgrade

Preparation is under way on the $3.2-million upgrade of Balclutha's main street.

Fulton Hogan crews were working to install new protruding kerbs in Clyde St and work continues to remove power poles and put main street powerlines underground, the Clutha District Council's manager of district assets, Jules Witt, said.

Although the work was about two weeks behind schedule, the council and contractor would be examining options ''to recover the lost time'', he said.

''There's plenty of time to do that. That's the thing with the scope of the project and the time-scale we've got.

''What it might mean is there may be a little bit more disruption if we have to opentwo work sites.''

Mr Witt said the council was waiting for a revised programme from Fulton Hogan to show how the work would get back on track for a November deadline.

He said the council was initially working to ensure crew were not ''traipsing mud throughout the place'' and making sure that disruption to pedestrian access was kept to a minimum.

''With any work like that, there will be a few potential teething issues,'' he said.

''We're just conscious about working with the contractor and making sure we minimise disruption to the activities on the main street.''

He said it was important for retailers and residents to direct queries to the site office at Elizabeth St and Clyde St.
