Police have yet to find a 79-year-old Romahapa man missing since Wednesday, despite using a helicopter and drone in their search.

Ian Mathieson's car was found stuck and abandoned in a paddock at the end of a farmer's race near State Highway 1 shortly after 4pm on Friday.

Mr Mathieson left a Clinton Lions Club meeting about 8pm on Wednesday and was heading home to Romahapa.

He was last seen in a disoriented state.

His black 2009 Nissan Maxima was found 3km down the farmer's race at Carterhope Rd.

Clutha-Taieri area response manager, Senior Sergeant Al Dickie, said nine search and rescue teams and a water rescue team were yesterday deployed to search waterways, re-search previous areas from the past two days, and search a wider boundary, including State Highway One towards Balclutha.

A large team of Clinton Lions Club members, where Ian was a member, also helped.

A helicopter was deployed to allow search managers to reassess search areas from above, and a drone was used to search the Kaihiku River through to the Clutha River, with ground teams in support.

Search dogs were also used.

Snr Sgt Dickie said some ponds on farms near where the car was located were iced over, and these would be looked at more closely when they thawed.

The search was to start again this morning.
