'Knifeman' arrested in Balclutha

A man allegedly carrying a knife was pepper-sprayed by police and arrested after causing a disturbance in the main street of Balclutha this afternoon.

Police were informed around 3.15pm that a man with a large knife was ''causing concern to the public'' on Clyde St near George St, Senior Sergeant Al Dickie said.

The man had earlier allegedly threatened a female acquaintance at a nearby address before leaving and threatening people on the street and causing minor damage.

Police arrived and found the man inside a local business premises. Pepper spray was used to enable police to restrain the man and take him into custody.

He would appear in Dunedin District Court tomorrow on a range of charges, Snr Sgt Dickie said.

No one was injured during the incident
