Rosebank School year 6 pupils Brooke Kendall (11, left) and Jorja Richards (10), raise their hands to show they want to meet Jess the dog during the Clutha District Council's dog safety demonstration at the Cross Recreation Centre, in Balclutha, yesterday.

The children were some of the 220 year 6 pupils from 19 South Otago schools to get hands-on, practical safety lessons during the Clutha Clued Up Kids day, organised under the Health Promoting Schools programme.

Health promoter Anne-Maree Fox, of Public Health South, said it was only the second time a day like it had been run for pupils in New Zealand - and a first for Otago.

Children ''of an age when they are becoming more independent'' rotated through 10 interactive lessons at the recreation centre.

Firearm safety, bicycle safety, fire safety, earthquake preparedness, water safety, quad bike safety, dog safety, first aid and relaxation were all covered by Clutha agencies.
