Mr McKenzie, who is originally from Waikoikoi, and is in his first year in the role, called the new car ''awesome'' at yesterday's car launch at the Cross Recreation Centre in Balclutha.

Mr McKenzie said the programme was popular with primary pupils.

''They just love it. I get a great reaction,'' he said.

''It's about getting the kids who aren't out there every weekend, giving them a bit of confidence.''

South/West Otago sports activator management committee member Antony Criglington, who is also the principal of Tapanui School, said every school in the Clutha district had the opportunity to take part in the programme.

Mr McKenzie provided three 45-minute sessions per class per term, and pupils at Tapanui School looked forward to his visits, Mr Criglington said.

The programme - 50% funded by Sport Otago and 50% funded by the schools themselves on a per-pupil rate - had resulted in increased participation in sports at his school and professional development for teachers who worked alongside the sports specialist.

''The work that goes on outside of his time in the school means that their skill level is increased as well. They're getting better at what they do, and they're learning a variety of sports.''
