Police pepper spray aggressive car passenger

A Gore man was pepper sprayed after becoming aggressive with police in South Otago, police say.

The 28 year old was one of six occupants of a car which was reported as being driven erratically near Kaihiku, between Balclutha and Gore, just before midnight on Saturday, Senior Sergeant Al Dickie said.

According to the other occupants of the car, which was being driven by a female friend, the man had tried to seize the steering wheel causing it to veer, Snr Sgt Dickie said.

Police pulled the vehicle over after a complaint from a member of the public.

''They became aggressive and unco operative with police,'' he said.

''One had to be pepper sprayed.

''Although [the car's other occupants] were aggressive, no further arrests were made.''

The group was also upset at the man and was ''expressing anger towards him'' after being pulled over.

Snr Sgt Dickie attributed their actions to alcohol consumption.

''They had been on the booze most of the day,'' he said.

It appeared they were drinking in the car as they drove around South Otago and they were returning to Gore at the time of the incident, he said.

The man was arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence, refusing a blood sample and resisting arrest.

He is due to appear in the Dunedin District Court this week.
