Police have released the names of two missing Owaka people whose boat was found just south of Nugget Point off the Catlins this morning.

They are Whetuki Sam Kopua (77) and Matekino Lucy Burling (60).

The pair were reported missing last night after heading out on a fishing trip in Mr Kopua's 5m boat, the Krystella, yesterday.

Police say they left Catlins Heads about 8.30am yesterday and were expected back before dark.

A marine search and rescue operation was launched last night, and continued this morning.

The empty boat was found at sea just south of Nugget Point about 10am today. It has been pulled to shore.

Searchers have been scouring the South Otago coastline today, using boats, land search teams, a fixed wing aircraft and a helicopter.

Divers have been in the water around where the boat was discovered but nothing further has been found. Police said they would be focusing on a wider area.

Sergeant Martin Bull said from the Owaka LandSAR base this morning the pair were "local identities" and the community was "pretty upset".

Asked about their chances of survival, Sgt Bull said the water was still cold and the pair were older, so it was a serious situation.

Family had been informed.

"They are hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst."
