Rosebank School year 7 and 8 pupils (from left) Kyle Morado, Fyn Edwards, Jeremy Chaplin, Leo Koyama, and facilitator Jacob Martin experiment with light at the South Otago Museum in Balclutha yesterday.

The museum is one of eight museums across New Zealand playing host to Illuminating NZ - Te Koanga this week.

The Unesco International Year of Light programme would bring 523 children through the museum, the museum's curator, Gary Ross, said.

Pupils from Balclutha Primary School, Rosebank School and Kaitangata School were learning about light in hands-on interactive activities during the week.

Museums from Northland to South Otago were celebrating the vernal equinox.

Tomorrow night at the South Otago Town and Country Club a more advanced discussion will be held on the emerging area of ''photonics''.

Dr James Dalton and Jacob Martin, of the University of Auckland, will speak from 7pm to 8pm.

There will be activities for children at the museum on Saturday at 11am and 1pm. .
