South Otago High School is in the final stages of appointing a new principal following the departure of Joanne Hutt last week.

Mrs Hutt left to become the principal at Kamo High School, in Whangarei, after three years as the principal at South Otago.

Originally from Christchurch, Ms Hutt was previously the deputy principal at Kamo High School. Attendance and academic results at South Otago High improved during her time as principal.

South Otago High School board of trustees chairman Brent Gardener said the board had gone through the appointment process and would probably have a candidate for the position confirmed next week.

In the meantime, deputy principals Greg Heller and Paul McDowall would take over principal duties.

The new principal, when appointed, will not take over until the 2016 school year.
