A sense of community and seeing old cars brought back to life is what makes the Kaitangata Car Show and Run so special, says one Otago resident.

Will Harvey (30), of Outram, had four cars entered in the annual event on Saturday, which was attended by hundreds of people. Mr Harvey had Chrysler Valiants and a 1963 Chevrolet Impala on display.

He said he enjoyed seeing old cars saved.

Mr Harvey's love for cars started when he was 15 years old.

Since then he had expanded his collection and entered them in shows all over the country.

Mr Harvey had entered his Valiant in both the Dunedin Mopar show and the Blenheim Mopar show.

People often commented on the crate rack he had positioned on the roof of his Valiant, Mr Harvey said.

He enjoyed entering the Kaitangata Car Show, saying it was important to support the community.

''It's good seeing all the old cars out of the garages,'' he said.

Mr Harvey admitted his family was not as interested in cars as him.

''I'm a bit of a black sheep,'' he said.

However, Mr Harvey had managed to turn his son, Cooper Harvey (5), into a car enthusiast.

Cooper said his favourite car was the Valiant.

The Kaitangata Car Show and Run saw over 150 cars registered for the drive around the district.

Most of the classic cars were buffed up for the special event, although one vehicle appeared neglected, with rusted panels and cobwebs.

Modern cars were also part of the event. Leigh Carmichael, of Kaitangata, was the local DJ and played tunes for the crowd from about 10am.

There was a barbecue, a hangi and a bouncy castle to keep the children amused, with all proceeds going to the Kaitangata Community Centre and Balclutha Scouts.
