Much ado over 150th

Everything is falling into place for the Owaka 150th celebrations, organisers say.

Organising committee convener Anne-Marie Holland said she was feeling good about how well things were coming together.

''Everybody is coming on board to do their little bit.''

The commemorative event in January will celebrate 150 years of settlement in the area.

A music festival, fete, movie night and rainbow run were just some of the special events on offer at the four-day event.

''There is something for everybody.''

She said she was overwhelmed with the support that came from the community.

The committee was a small group and just the ''vehicle'' to co-ordinate the event. It was up to individual groups to do their part.

There was so much going on, it would be difficult for the committee to do it all on its own.

''All those groups are putting their hand up and taking charge of different parts of the event.''

There was already a lot of interest in the main events.

The Shipwreck Ball, with attendees encouraged to dress to the pre-1965-era theme, had already sold over half of the 200 available tickets.

Ms Holland recommended people get in early to avoid being disappointed.

An opening ceremony would feature the unveiling of a commemorative sculpture by artist Russell Beck.

Floats would parade from Pounawea into Owaka on January 10. There were a lot of people who had connections to Owaka even if they did not live there, Ms Holland said.

''We'd just love to see as many people come in and join for the celebrations as possible.''
