Water story compelling

Farmers from southwest Otago have been recognised nationally for ''telling the story'' about how they improved water quality in their local river.

Farmers who worked together to improve water quality in the Pomahaka River were joint winners with Wairarapa Moana in the ''Story'' category at the annual New Zealand River awards on Thursday.

The Pomahaka farmers told the story in a short video of how they improved the water quality by banding together to reduce run-off pollution.

Judge Rebecca MacFie said the scale of the project, the range of farmers involved and the group's commitment to restoring the river had all made the Pomahaka story stand out from seven other videos.
