Board baulks at pool garden cost

Plans to convert the old Lawrence swimming pool into a community garden are likely to be scrapped after estimates for work required came to almost $50,000.

Such a plan was submitted to the Lawrence Tuapeka Community Board by Marjorie Hay last year.

The board decided at a meeting on Wednesday more consultation was needed before the site's future could be decided.

A recent quote from Meyer Engineering indicated the necessary removal of timber purlins and girts at the pool for its conversion could exceed $46,000.

That did not include an additional $5000 for the installation of scaffolding and filling in the pool.

Clutha district councillor for Lawrence Geoff Blackmore said the cost was far more than the community board would be prepared to pay.

There was the potential to keep the purlins installed but that would run the risk of creating maintenance costs.

It was speculated ongoing costs could match the cost of removing the purlins.

Cr Blackmore wanted to investigate how much community support there was for the garden and what other options were available.

"I've had more comments negative about keeping the structure,'' he said.

Demolishing the building at a cost to the Clutha District Council was one option.

He said the pool was an eyesore and something needed to be done.

"It's been there 10 years too long,'' he said.

Under a review of all council assets, the pool was up for public discussion for the next two years.

The community board agreed to seek quotes for the cost of demolishing the building as well as the cost of ongoing maintenance work if the purlins were not removed.

They will also meet the designer of the community garden to see how she would like the board to progress.
